Could Bread Reach $5 a Loaf?
Paying $5 for bread--it sounds ludicrous, but with reports of a world-wide wheat shortage--the worst in 30 years--it could soon become reality.
What's to blame for such a severe shortage? Experts cite drought conditions, increased demand and smaller harvests (as more farmers turn to growing corn for ethanol) for the shrinking stockpile.
Whatever the reason, one thing is clear: products made with wheat are about to become a lot more expensive, and indeed the upwards trend has already started. Pick up a loaf of bread, a box of pasta or a box of cereal, and you can pretty much guarantee that it'll cost more than it did last summer or even last month.
It may not be good news, but there are things that you can do to minimize the pinch. Your best bet? Stock up on flour before the prices increase again, and start making your own bread. A little kneading can save a lot of dough.
