Call me stubborn, but I refuse to let the increasing grocery prices increase my grocery budget; and that’s meant cutting out a lot of things.
Most recently it’s meant cutting out yogurt. At $3.99 for a 32 ounce tub of organic, I decided it just didn’t fit into my grocery budget any longer (if it ever did). So, now I make my own yogurt for a fraction of the cost, and have a bit more money to spend at the store. Not a bad deal at all.

The NYTimes just ran a column (4/15/09, “They Do the Work, You Reap the Yogurt”, http://www.nytimes.com/2009/04/15/dining/15curi.html) on making your own yogurt. They don’t have a ‘frugal’ spin, but it reminded me that we used to make our own and then got out of the habit. Of course, you beat them to it in posting and in pointing out the frugal aspects of DIY yogurt as well. So I’m trying it out again. You can’t beat the price, and the result is better than store-bought yogurt, too. Wish me luck!
