Uses for Newspaper Sleeves

Wednesday October 1, 2008

Plastic newspaper sleeves – most people look at them and see trash, but the frugal person looks at them and sees possibilities. Have you found a great use for them? I know I have. Here's one of my favorites:

Travel Bags

Protect the contents of your suitcase from shampoo and lotion spills by sliding the bottles into plastic newspaper sleeves, and tying the bags shut. Do the same with shoes, to protect your clothes from dirty soles.

They make excellent “pooper” picker uppers. Put it over your hand and pick up after your pet and then turn it inside out and tie a knot in it and discard it. No fuss no mess. Will not work too well for a big dog though.

They make an excellent outside wrapper for bread when you throw it in the freezer. The single layer bread comes in is not always protective

Since we don’t get newspapers delivered and use canvas bags at the store, we don’t have as many bags as other people. But the ones we do accumulate I save to use for shipping! I use them as packing material in boxes around fragile items, or just an extra layer to protect from moisture and impacts.

I’ve used them as a water-proofing barrier for my feet when walking in wet weather. Slip them on over your socks and they’ll help keep your feet dry when walking through puddles.

They are great for safely bagging poison ivy. I just stick my hand all the way in the bag, grab the poison ivy and pull, inverting the bag. They are nice and long, so it is easier to not touch it. I wear gloves, just to be extra-careful, and chop it into bits that will fit the bag.

Newspaper bags are also great for covering an arm or hand cast while showering to keep your cast from getting wet.
