Save More with Google Alerts

Wednesday October 22, 2008

Are you familiar with Google Alerts? If not, you're missing out on one of the niftiest web tools around.

Here's how it work: you go to the Google Alerts page; tell Google which search terms you're interested in; and then they send you e-mail updates anytime one of your terms shows up on Google.

Now, what does this have to do with frugal living? Lots, thanks to the fine folks at Money Ning, who recently realized that Google Alerts could be used to capture coupons and deals. Genius!

So, let's say you love shopping at Old Navy, but love it even more when you have a coupon. With Google Alerts, you could request an e-mail anytime the term "Old Navy coupon" or "Old Navy promotional code" showed up on the web. Good right? And that's just one example of how Google Alerts could help you save.

Here are some other terms to try:

Your favorite grocery store + coupons
Your favorite restaurants + coupons
Your favorite products + free sample
Your favorite brick-and-mortar retailers + coupons
Your favorite online retailers + promotional code
Your favorite stores + sale
Your favorite stores + clearance
Your favorite stores + closeout
Your favorite stores + a specific percentage off

Why not plug in a few of your own terms, and give Google Alerts a whirl?
