Swap Your Way to a Halloween Costume

Friday October 24, 2008

Still need a Halloween costume? This weekend is a great time to do something about that. Why not call or e-mail your friends with a list of the costumes that you have, and ask if they're willing to make a swap? It'll be good for your budget and their's.

Let the stores keep their $40-a-piece costumes, I say.

I just attended a Fall Festival and dressed as a Scarecrow. The costume was FREE from stuff I had already had around the house! I used a straw garden hat and went to Crayola.com and downloaded free fall leave pictures which I colored and taped on my straw hat. I went to DLTK which is another free sight with LOADS of crafts to download! I downloaded a crow craft and put it together. I taped one on my hat along with the leaves. I then found my plaid camping sweatshirt which I used for my top. I taped the other crow near the shoulder of my sweat shirt. I also made a sunflower from a coffee filter and painted the inside black and the rim yellow and then cut along the pleats of the coffee filter, I then taped that near the other shoulder. I then took a pair of old ripped jeans, fringed them by cutting up the legs and wore two mixed matched knee socks. I used some raffia straw and tied it in a bow and pinned it to the front of my sweatshirt. I took more colored leaves and taped them all over the costume. For make-up I used red lipstick on my cheeks and lips. I used brown eye-shadow and made my eyes round by applying the the shadow to the upper and lower pat of my eye. I used an eye-liner to draw “stitches” around my eyes and mouth I used mascara on my eyes and eye brows to make them look fuller. I then put on my garden gloves and my boots! A totally AWESOME costume for NOTHING!!!!

It doesn’t even have to be leftover costumes. If you know someone that works in the medical field, you could ask to borrow scrubs for a doctor or nurse costume, for example. Swapping your way to a costume certainly beats paying for one in my book.

And, if you’re not in the habit of hanging on to your costumes, you may want to consider it. Many costumes can be used for one thing, and than tweaked just a bit to create a new costume next year.

I think this is a great idea. Who wants to spend money on something to wear one night? It’s ridiculous and so wasteful. Plus, there is so much more creativity when you are using things from around your house. I have used leaves, dried flowers, even bird feathers I have collected to make amazing costumes and so have my friends, so why not swap?

I am interested in swapping play costumes for high school plays. They are very costly and take alot of time to create for so many participants. I have five years of handmade play costumes…Wizard of Oz, Charlie Brown, Grease, Shop of Horrors, and more. I am in NJ and don’t know what we’re doing next year, but would like to network…thanks.
