Layaway is Back

Wednesday November 19, 2008

This time last year, the news was awash with stories of Wal-Mart and other retail giants who were doing away with their layaway programs. This year? It's all about who's bringing layaway back, and who was smart enough to hang on to their programs to begin.

Thinking about layawaying your way to a more affordable holiday season? Then, here's a list of stores to shop at:

Kmart
Sears
Marshalls
Burlington Coat Factory
TJ Maxx
Elayaway.com

Know of other stores that are offering layaway? Share the details!

No, but only because the big ticket items that I’m purchasing can’t be put on layaway. But they had already been included in the budget.

I have three (YES, THREE) family birthdays in Dec. Two are my children. They like parties for their b-days like all other kids…So I ask: How else could I get through the season without layaway, a christmas club the size of an IRA, and creative planning–all without using plastic? When layaway went away–so did my single most effective advance planning tool. Thank-you to the genius’ in the corporate sector that realized a great source of income over the holidays had been eliminated and brought it back in time to salvage my sanity!

My parents used layaway when I was a kid and it was the only they could get through the holiday with 5 kids and a birthday 6 days before christmas. Now I have 5 kids and a birthday 4 days after christmas, and the only way I can get it all done is by layaway, since I refuse to use credit or debit cards to shop. I think it also teaches kids an important lesson in the value of putting money aside and working towards ownership by paying out a little at a time to reach the goal.
