In the summer, grandma always used the leftover boiling water drained from pasta or vegetables to dump on her walkway. Crabgrass was always trying to grow a foothold between the bricks and millions of tiny little picnic ants would swarm the walk. The boiling water killed enough of the ants and weeds that she never had to resort to poisons/herbicides or go out and weed the walkway by hand (just don’t do this wearing flipflops!)
