Busy finalizing your Thanksgiving grocery list? Before you head to the store, take another look in your pantry to see if there are any items that you can eliminate from your list. Poultry seasoning, pumpkin pie spice and pie crust are just a few of the many things that you can whip up from basic pantry staples:

I recently took the time to inventory my pantry . . . it took most of one morning. I also inventoried my side by side freezer and the chest freezer in the basement. I am so glad I did. I now keept a list on my computer in Excel. At the end of the day I check off the things I used and have a complete list of what I have. When I go grocery shopping I can print the lists and take them with me for quick reference. It was certainly worth the effort and I think it will pay me back in spades in less duplicates and spoiled foods. Its also easier to look at a list than to stir through items in the freezer or pantry, not to mention things are now neat and orderly and much easier to find. With Excel I was able to make the list and catergorize the items, then use the program to sort them aphabetically. Beside each item I noted it’s location ~ S for shelf, TW for Tupperware container , C for canister, etc., so they’re easy to locate as well.

I scaled our list way back this year. We went back to the basics with our menu and we had almost everything we needed on hand in the pantry. We’re going to have a great meal and it isn’t costing us much to pull it all together. I think we’ll enjoy more because of that too.
