Old-Fashioned Fruit Cake

User Rating 5 Star Rating (1 Review)

Looking for a good, old-fashioned fruit cake recipe? Try this one submitted by Janet:

Prep Time: 15 minutes

Cook Time: 2 hours, 30 minutes

Total Time: 2 hours, 45 minutes

Yield: 2 loaves

  • 3 cups flour (set aside 1/4 cup)
  • 1 1/3 cups sugar
  • 2 tsp salt
  • 1 tsp baking powder
  • 2 tsp cinnamon
  • 1 tsp nutmeg
  • 1 cup orange juice
  • 1 cup salad oil
  • 4 eggs
  • 1/4 cup dark molasses
  • 1 pkg (15oz) golden raisins
  • 1 pkg (8oz) chopped dates
  • 1 1b container candied fruit
  • 1 1/2 cups chopped walnuts

1. Heat oven to 275.

2. Grease and flour two loaf pans.

3. Measure all ingredients, except fruit and nuts, into large mixing bowl. Blend 1/2 minute at low speed, scraping bowl constantly. Then, beat on high speed for three minutes.

4. Mix 1/4 cup flour with fruit and nuts, and then stir into batter.

5. Spread mixture into pans.

6. Bake 2 1/2-3 hours, until a toothpick inserted comes out clean. Cool in pans 10 minutes on racks; then, remove from pans. Cool completely; then, wrap in brandy soaked cheesecloth. (I find the best way is fruitcake wrapped in cheesecloth, plastic wrap and then a layer of foil.) Store in a cool place for 2-6 weeks.

Janet says: This recipe came to me through my mother-in-law. It was passed down as a family favorite of my husband's.

Best fruitcake I have tried, Member dlrcpa

I tried this recipe 2 years ago, so I made the 3rd batch recently. It has a very fruity flavor and moist texture due to the orange juice for liquid and oil instead of shortening. The combination of a candied fruit with the dates, raisins, and nuts is nice and balanced. I have tried various liqueurs to soak the finished fruitcake, I only apply liqueur once, not repeatedly. I'm really happy with this recipe. I have given away single slices and always get compliments. -- Donna in VA
