Need canning jars, but not interested in paying full price for them? Here's how to get your jars for less:
- Look for them at yard sales. If you don't see any out, ask the homeowner if they have any to sell. You'll be amazed at how often this works
- Sign up for the Ball newsletter to receive special offers
- Check flea markets, thrift stores and estate sales for inexpensive jars
- Watch for coupons in the Sunday paper at the beginning of canning season. Ball seems to run one each year
- Let friends, family and co-workers know that you're looking for jars. People often have a few jars taking up space in their cupboard simply because they don't know what to do with them
- Post requests for canning jars on community and church message boards
- Watch Craigslist and Freecycle for jar offers or post your own request for jars
- Stock up on jars at the end of the season when they go on clearance
- Check the classified section in your local newspaper for used jar listings
As you search for cheap jars, here are a few safety issues to keep in mind:
- Mayonnaise and pasta sauce jars should not be reused for canning even if they say "Ball" or "Mason" on them
- Any jar with cracks or chips needs to be discarded
- Lids should only be used one time
- Only modern jars should be used when canning
