Make Your Own Scouring Powder

By Erin Huffstetler, About.com

Scouring powder is perfect for cleaning hard surfaces like stove tops, counters, porcelain, fiberglass and tile; and it's easy to make too. Grab some supplies, and give it a try.

What You Need:

  • Baking soda
  • A sponge

What You Do:

Sprinkle baking soda onto a damp sponge (or cloth), and rub it into the surface that you wish to clean. Then, rinse with water, and you're done!

Why This Works:

Baking soda is a mild abrasive and a natural disinfectant; so it's tough on stains and germs, but easy on your house.

Benefits of Scouring with Baking Soda:

  • inexpensive
  • chlorine-free
  • effective sanitizer
  • effective stain remover
  • effective deodorizer
  • safe for use around kids and pets
  • safe for most surfaces

Tips:

1) Test on a small area before using on plastic

2) Battling a tough stain? Then, make a paste from baking soda and water, and let it sit on the stain for a couple hours
