Make a Sweater Blanket

By Erin Huffstetler, About.com

Raid your closet or the nearest thrift store for outdated sweaters that you can recycle into a warm and wonderful blanket.

Difficulty: Easy
Time Required: A weekend
Here's How:
  1. Decide on a shape and size for the patches on your sweater blanket. They can all be uniform or each one can be different – the choice is yours.

  2. Cut out patches from the sweaters. Sleeves can be cut open along the seam and opened up to get more fabric out of each one.

  3. Once you have enough patches, lay them out on the floor to design the pattern for your blanket. Keep moving the patches around until you are satisfied with the design.

  4. Pin and sew the patches together to create the top for your blanket.

  5. Then, cut out a back from another piece of fabric, and sew it to the blanket top to complete your sweater blanket.

Tips:
  1. If you decide to work with wool sweaters, you'll need to felt them first. To do so, simply run the sweaters through the wash on the hottest setting and then dry them.
  2. Customize your design by cutting out shapes from the sweaters to emboidery on the finished blanket.
What You Need:
  • A bunch of old sweaters
  • Thread
  • Backing fabric
  • Sewing machine
  • Scissors
  • Pins
