What is the Cash for Appliances Rebate Program?:

The Cash for Appliances Rebate Program is a $300 million goverment stimulus plan designed to help Americans increase the energy efficiency of their homes. Rebates will be awarded to consumers who purchase certain Energy Star appliances for their homes and submit the necessary paperwork.

Each state will administer its own program; and will be responsible for choosing qualifying appliances and rebate amounts and for distributing checks.

Cash for Clunkers for Appliances
The State Energy Efficiency Appliance Rebate Program

When Does the Program Start?:

The program will start in April 2010 in most states, but has already started in some states.

Who Qualifies?:

In most states, the program is open to everyone, though some states have chosen to add restrictions (age, those with disabilities, etc.).

Which Appliances are Eligible?:

Eligible appliances vary by state, but can include Energy Star:

  • Dishwashers
  • Refrigerators
  • Freezers
  • Washing machines
  • Water heaters
  • Ceiling fans
  • Central air conditioners
  • Room air conditioners
  • Heat pumps (both air source and geothermal)
  • Furnaces
  • Boilers

How Much is the Rebate?:

Rebate amounts vary from appliance to appliance and from state to state, but most fall in the $50-$200 range. Heat and air systems generally earn the largest rebates – as much as $1,300 in some states.

How Do I Get My Rebate?:

Simply purchase one of the appliances approved by your state, and submit your paperwork to receive your check by mail.

Note: In some cases, stores may offer to give you an instant rebate and then submit the paperwork on your behalf.

Important Things to Know About the Cash for Appliances Rebate?:

  • You may need to trade in an old appliance to be eligible for the rebate
  • The program will last only as long as the money holds out. So, you'll want to act fast, if you're interested in participating
  • It may be necessary to submit your rebate forms to multiple agencies to collect the full rebate amount
