Name:
Faith from South Carolina
Your Favorite Source for Bargains:
Goodwill for clothes; Aldi and WalMart for groceries; Dollar General for make-up and cleaning products.
Your Best Bargain of All Time:
My Library card. I'd rather read a good book than go to movies or watch TV or DVDs. And perhaps my dual-pane replacement windows.
Your Best Money-Saving Tip:
Walk or ride your bicycle to work; it provides good exercise, and clears one's mind by avoiding the stress of driving in traffic.
The Worst Money-Saving Advice You've Ever Received:
I don't recall being given any bad money-saving advice. I usually make my own decisions after long consideration.
What You're Doing Right Now to Save:
I am still working full-time, although I draw my social security. So, I live on my social security check, and save my salary (after first putting the maximum amount the government allows into supplemental retirement). I hang my laundry on an outside line to dry. This past Saturday when the temperature was down to 11 degrees, I still hung the laundry outside, and it dried because the sun was shining! I also turn my furnace thermostat down to 50 degrees when I leave for work, turning it up when I get home and then back down again when I go to bed.
I drive my car only on Saturdays when I grocery shop. It is now 17-years-old with only 54,000 miles on it. My house is not air conditioned. Even with our hot summers, I manage to stay cool and comfortable by closing windows during the day, opening them at night and using ceiling fans. I also don't use a cell phone (one of my phones is rotary), and I don't subscribe to cable or satellite TV. I have no computer at home yet, but will get one when I retire (hopefully one ready for recycling at work). I very seldom eat out, and do not buy prepared foods at the grocery store.
