Bay Leaf Substitute

Bay Leaves

Bay leaf is frequently used to flavor soups and meat dishes, but if you don't have any on hand, this substitute will do just fine:

Prep Time: 1 minute

Total Time: 1 minute

  • Thyme

Substitute 1/4 tsp. dried thyme for each bay leaf or 1/4 tsp. crushed bay leaf called for in the recipe.

Have dried bay leaves, when your recipe calls for crushed, or fresh bay leaves when your recipe calls for dried?

Use this formula to arrive at the proper substitution:

One fresh bay leaf = two dried leaves
One dried bay leaf = 1/4 tsp. crushed bay leaf
One fresh bay leaf = 1/2 tsp. crushed bay leaf
