How to Stop Credit Card Offers from Reaching Your Mailbox

By Erin Huffstetler, About.com

Unwanted credit card offers can be a real nusiance. They tempt us to spend, clutter up our homes and waste valuable resources. Enough already! Here's how to stop those credit card offers from reaching your mailbox:

Go to optoutprescreen.com, and follow the instructions on the website to opt-out of "firm" offers. These are the credit card offers that come marked as "pre-approved."

You'll be given two choices: opting-out through the website for five years or opting-out by mail for permanent removal from pre-approved mailings.

More About OptOutPrescreen

OptOutPrescreen is run by the Consumer Credit Reporting Industry – made up of Equifax, Experian, Innovis and TransUnion. Since the website is secure, the information you provide is guaranteed to be safe from prying eyes.

How It Works:

Opting-out prohibits the credit reporting agencies from providing your credit file to the companies that want to consider you for firm offers; and without a peek at your file, those companies can’t pre-approve you for anything.

Need to Shop for a New Credit Card?

No problem. Just head to bankrate.com to compare all of the current credit card offers. Then, choose the one that works best for you. There’s no need to opt back in to all of those mailings.

A Final Note: You may still receive offers from companies that you already have a credit card with, since they have access to your credit file.
