Question: When do you need to sterilize canning jars?
Answer:

According to current USDA guidelines, canning jars need to be sterilized before they are filled, if they will be processed in a water-bath canner for less than 10 minutes.

They do not need to be pre-sterilized, if they will be processed in a pressure canner. Sterilization will occur during processing.
