They have a spin-off store called Goodwill Computer Works that sells used (and sometimes even new) computers at a deep discount, and we're not talking about old clunkers either. When you walk into a Computer Works location, you'll find laptops, desktops, printers, gaming systems, and even flat-screen TVs as neatly displayed as they are at any electronics store, and just as well equipped. Each device's specs are clearly noted on the price tag, and computers are turned on, so you can take them for a test drive before you buy. To ensure you're getting a quality computer, trained technicians test and refurbish all electronics before they're put up for sale. At the Charleston, South Carolina, store, for example, they install new hard drives and the latest operating system on every computer that they sell. And if a computer isn't deemed up to par, it gets dismantled for the parts. Anything worth salvaging is sold in a store, and the rest gets recycled. That also makes the store a gold mine for anyone who wants to build their own computer, as well as anyone who's looking to repair or upgrade a computer. You'll find power cords, cables, battery packs, memory, hard drives, graphic cards, monitors, keyboards, mice, and more. And like any well-stocked electronics store, you'll also find DVDs, Blu-ray disks, video games, and cell phone accessories, plus a few surprises, like all the parts you need to fix your flat screen TV. The only things you won't find at a Computer Works are the big price tags and the pushy salespeople. Expect to pay half as much as you would at a regular retail store. Many locations even offer a 90-day warranty and complimentary computer support. Goodwill Computer Works stores are only in a handful of states so far, but they seem to be expanding the program.
