Frugal Friday Challenge

Friday September 26, 2008

Have you taken part in one of the Frugal Friday Challenges yet? If not, now's a great time to start.

Today's challenge:

Spend some time looking around for loose change to add to your change jar. Check under the couch cushions; dig through purses and pockets; look in your car; search inside the dryer and the junk drawer. If it's a spot where money is likely to hide, it needs to be explored.

Go find that hidden coinage. Then, report how much you found over at the forum. Are you in?

I do this every Friday. I have a jar for pennies and one for everything else. Recently the penny jar was full. so we rolled it (yes we did) and we had $170.00!!! in just pennies. i can not wait until the other jar is full. I bet we could make a mortgage payment with that Jar!

I have a really cool jar that counts my change for me….right now I’m almost at $30! I don’t know what I will do with it yet but it’s nice knowing that I have it for whatever… The only downside is that we don’t have any coinstars anywhere in my area so I would have to take it to the bank…

(5) Tina says:

Andrea, In the long run you would be better taking it to the bank since CoinStar charges you a percentage where as the bank doesn’t. You can go to the bank and ask for free soin wrappers also.

Check with your bank. Mine has a coin counting machine that is free if you have an account. You many have to stop at another branch, but it is worth it.

I found $22.57 in a pair of shorts that had been washed and I was getting ready to pack away. Whoopie ! That will be $5.00 for lunch and $17.57 to sock away for that rainy day.

(8) Margie says:

$1.70! That’s more than I expected to find because this is something I do regularly. My husband would rather break a $20.00 than take out change to pay for anything. It drives me nuts. I am the opposite. I would rather pay all in change than use a bill. I left a $3.00 tip in change this week and he shuddered.

I couldnt find anything hidden around but I wanted to share this. I dont spend change. When I get change I take it home and put it into a bank and save it. Last week I was on vacation and decided to cash in my change, a rather sizable amout to look at. It totaled to $240.00! That took me about a year to build just by not spending change, not a very long time, in my opinion. I thought you might like to hear that story.

Whenever I write a check at the grocery store or gas station, I round my check amount up to the next even dollar amount and then I take that change and put it in my change jar! You’d be surprised how quickly it adds up!!!

(12) susan smith says:

My husband and I have been using a change jar for some time. At the end of the day, any loose change we have goes into a jar. When we get short on gas money, we cash it in, last month we had $31!

(13) Kootenay Annie says:

I have done this for years. As a single Mom in the l970’s I started just saving dimes. That became my Christmas fund for good eats. It covered a ham, and small turkey, and all the trimmings, it also covered all my baking goods. Now I save quarters and dimes for that! But many years it has made the difference in a great Christmas and a Bleak Christmas. Somehow if you can put out special meals that are memorable, things don’t seem so bad. All my gifts to friends and neighbours were baked, and my girls helped me decorate and deliver the gifts.
I have a penny jar and also a jar for nickles, loonies and toonies.

(14) Cynthia says:

I’ve always been a fan of saving change. In the two years before I got married I saved all change (I never ever spend change during the day) I saved over $1000 in change and small bills I’d randomly toss in the jar. That money was used for our honeymoon.

(15) Mark says:

I have a little bank shaped like a baseball. My passion is to go to St. Louis Cardinals baseball games… but the cost just goes up each year. Rather than nuke the credit card, I throw all my loose change into the baseball bank. By spring, there is enough saved to go to one or two games a season. I believe you just have to have some fun without guilt!
